Thank you for visiting my webpage. My name is Jonathan C. and I consider myself a violinmaker, woodworker and carpenter, in no particular order. I am always on a path of growth and greater learning, and my woodworks reflect that growth through time. I am always seeking mastery in the things I care about, but as of now I am content to simply be on the journey, and to be competent and proficient.
You are welcome to contact me to commission pieces, but I would like to use and create from the beautiful wood I currently have first. I encourage you to look at my current works for sale. Every piece I make will likely be distinct and unique from anything I’ve made before it, and its dimensions and shape will in large part be determined by the materials themselves.
What makes me different from others is that I seek to take extra care and time to bring out the most beauty out of the natural state of the wood. Each tree and each piece of wood has unique characteristics, and working with each piece should come with thoughtful execution. The way I finish wood is slow, methodical, and done very much by hand. I use power tools as well, but hand tools, hand planes, scrapers, etc., are my bread and butter. Finishing wood with a hand plane or scraper gives a superior finish and brings out the most clarity, chatoyance and beauty in the wood. I prefer to use natural products as well and avoid the use of products that contain petroleum-derivatives.
Lastly, I love trees. I enjoy studying them, observing them, using their wood, their resins, eating their fruit… I find I have a special connection to and appreciation of trees that far surpasses the norm. They are majestic beings that deserve our respect and our love, and as they gave us the gift of their life, we should give them at the very least our gratitude.
