Woodworks

I had spent years learning the trade of violinmaking; simultaneously during that learning process, I had to constantly work on the layout and interior design of my violin shop, for both aesthetic purposes and practical purposes. We would constantly have a flux of inventory and repair projects coming in and out, and as we grew I had to figure out how to most efficiently utilize our space. During these years I realized that it wasn’t just violinmaking that I was drawn to. I found that I simply loved the process of creating, designing, or building - particularly when it came to woodworking. In other words, I wasn’t only drawn to violinmaking, but all kinds of woodworking (and other creative pursuits). I’d find a simple pleasure in rearranging a room, or building wooden shelving for example, or building a workbench with only hand tools.

There are numerous species of wood to work with and infinite possibilities when it comes to getting creative with wood, the thought of which is very exciting to me. I love everything about woodworking, and it is one of my life’s greatest joys to have found my connection to this art. However, in this field, I do believe we will always need to remember to think in terms of our planet’s environmental needs. For example, there are probably every day forests that are being clear-cut due to profit-driven and business-motivated reasons, but we can’t forget the importance of taking care of forests and the balance of the planet.
