Black Walnut Console

This black walnut (Juglans nigra) table/console was started sometime in early 2024. It went through several iterations before I finally decided to settle on this design. It was one of my first big furniture projects, and therefore it was more so a learning experience than anything else. It was designed to be a piece built to be sold with no particular customer in mind, just something that would honor the wood that I found.

These particular slabs of black walnut possessed a depth, clarity, figure, and chatoyance that I don’t usually see in black walnut, and I even had the opportunity to build a bookmatched piece…so that is what happened. Black walnut, or at least this particular wood, is especially beautiful at night time in low artificial light or candle light, where one can really see the depth of the wood. Pictures don’t really capture the beauty of how the wood will “glow” and move under certain lighting, which is the case for many other wooden works as well. I included an old photo below capturing how it looked under low lighting at night time, when it was first finished and freshly oiled in 2024.
